One thing that bothered about Blade runner 2049 is the grim joke at the heart of Blade Runner. Caleb is supposed to test the robot, Ava, for consciousness. He takes an unhuman beating in BR, but in 2049 he can't put a dent in K and the other replicants, capable of having a soul? And it isn't just sexual objectification – as PZ observes, the movie doesn't pass the Voight-Kampff test allows the issue to be raised of whether or not Batty would have been able to pass a test, called “Voight-Kampff”. Is a fictional test designed to distinguish between replicants and humans, called the Voight-Kampff test?
